Χάονες

Οι Χάονες ήταν ένα από τα αρχαία ελληνικά φύλα [1][2] που εγκαταστάθηκαν στην περιοχή της Αρχαίας Ηπείρου, και συγκεκριμένα στα βορειοδυτικά της. Υποστηρίζεται ότι η ελληνική μειονότητα της Βορείου Ηπείρου είναι απόγονοι των αρχαίων Χαόνων.

Γεωγραφικά, η Χαονία εκτεινόταν στη σημερινή νοτιοδυτική Αλβανία, φραγμένη από τα βόρεια και βορειοανατολικά από τα Κεραύνια όρη, και επίσης περιελάμβανε το βόρειο κομμάτι του νομού Θεσπρωτίας (με νότιο σύνορο τον ποταμό Καλαμά/Θυάμη), και περιλαμβάνει τις παράκτιες περιοχές Ωρικού, Χειμάρρας, Ογχησμού (σύγχρονων Αγίων Σαράντα) και Βουθρωτού στην Αδριατική θάλασσα και στο Ιόνιο πέλαγος. Πρωτεύουσα της Χαονίας ήταν η Φοινίκη (σύγχρονη Finiq), πρωτεύουσα αργότερα του Κοινού των Ηπειρωτών.

Στην ηπειρωτική ενδοχώρα οι Δέξαροι (ή Δασσαρέται) που κατοικούσαν στο όρος Άμυρον (σημ. Τομόρι) και εκτείνονταν ως το νότιο πέρας της λίμνης Λιχνήτιδος (σημ. Αχρίδα), ήταν η βορειότερη από τις φυλές της ομάδας των Χαόνων. Κατά την περίοδο αυτή της ακμής τους οι Χάονες κατείχαν ασφαλώς την πεδιάδα της Κορυτσάς. Δεδομένου ότι ο τύμβος ΙΙ στη θέση Κούτσι, κοντά στην Κορυτσά, περιείχε ταφές νέων ηγεμόνων της περιόδου 650-500 π.Χ. περίπου, η αρχή της επεκτάσεως των Χαόνων μπορεί να χρονολογηθεί στις αρχές του 7ου αι. π.Χ.[3] Η εξουσία της ομάδας των Χαόνων μπορεί να εκτεινόταν εκείνο το διάστημα και επί των Μολοσσών.

O Θουκυδίδης αναφέρει για πρώτη φορά τους Χάονες τον 5ο αιώνα π.Χ.[4] Ο Στράβων έγραψε ότι οι Χάονες, οι Μολοσσοί και οι Θεσπρωτοί ήταν οι τρεις βασικότερες από τις 14 φυλές της Ηπείρου, οι δύο πρώτες κυβέρνησαν ολόκληρη την Ήπειρο.[5] Ο Περίπλους του Ψευδοσκύλακα κάνει σαφή διάκριση ανάμεσα στους Χάονες και τις Ιλλυρικές φυλές που ζούσαν βόρεια από αυτούς, είτε παραλιακά, είτε στην ενδοχώρα.[6] Σύμφωνα με τον Βιργίλιο[7] οι Χάονες υπήρξαν απόγονοι του επώνυμου γενάρχη τους Χάονα (Αρχ.: Χάων). Από την Εποχή του Χαλκού μέχρι και την Εποχή του σιδήρου οι Χάονες χρησιμοποιούσαν την πρακτική της ταφής σε Τύμβους.[8] Ο Νίκολας Χάμοντ κατέληξε στο συμπέρασμα ότι τον 6ο αιώνα π.Χ. οι Χάονες κυριαρχούσαν σε μια τεράστια περιοχή από τον Κόλπο του Αυλώνα μέχρι ανατολικότερα από την πεδιάδα της Κορυτσάς όπου βρισκόντουσαν οι Λίμνες Πρέσπες.[9] Οι Χάονες σύμφωνα με τον Χάμοντ επεκτάθηκαν και νότια της Κορυτσάς στον Γράμμο αλλά οι Ιλλυριοί Ταυλάντιοι και οι Κορίνθιοι έποικοι που ίδρυσαν την Ιλλυρική Απολλωνία κατέκτησαν τις παραλιακές περιοχές, το σημερινό Μαλακάστερ.[10] Οι υποθέσεις του Χάμοντ βασίζονται σε μια αναφορά που έγραψε ο Εκαταίος ο Μιλήσιος ότι οι Χάονες και οι Ιλλυριοί Εγχέλιοι ήταν γειτονικοί λαοί και η παρουσία Τύμβων τον 6ο αιώνα π.Χ. στην Κορυτσά, το ταφικό σύμβολο των Χαόνων. Ο Μπογκντάνι απορρίπτει ωστόσο την σύνδεση των νέων κυριάρχων της Κορυτσάς με τους Χάονες, δεν υπάρχουν ιστορικές πηγές και το βόρειο παρακλάδι των Χαόνων Δασσαρήτες περιορίζονται μόνο σε ένα κείμενο του Εκαταίου.[11] Οι Χάονες ήταν ωστόσο η πιο πανίσχυρη Ηπειρωτική φυλή στα μέσα του 7ου αιώνα π.Χ. (650 π.Χ.), τους διαδέχθηκαν κατόπιν οι Μολοσσοί.[12] Οι Ιλλυριοί και οι Χάονες μάλλον βρισκόντουσαν σε σύγκρουση, ο Πολύβιος αναφέρει μια καταστροφική επιδρομή των Ιλλυριών στην πρωτεύουσα των Χαόνων Φοινίκη απέναντι από την Κέρκυρα. Οι Ρωμαίοι έμποροι που βρισκόντουσαν στην πόλη είχαν πολλά θύματα, το αποτέλεσμα ήταν να ανακηρύξει η Ρωμαϊκή δημοκρατία τον πόλεμο στις Ιλλυρικές φυλές και να ξεσπάσουν οι Ιλλυρικοί πόλεμοι.[13] Ο Χάονες αποτελούσαν μέρος του Κοινού των Ηπειρωτών ως το 170 π.Χ., όταν υποτάχθηκαν στους Ρωμαίους.
